Reading: Diane Glancy

On May 19, 2022, we had the great pleasure of welcoming the acclaimed Native American writer and academic Diane Glancy (Cherokee) in Bonn for a reading. Glancy is the author of more than 60 books of prose, poetry, plays, and screenplays. She has received numerous awards and accolades, in particular for her experimental style, which crosses and combines genres, and for creatively rewriting Native American history.

For our event, Glancy read from one of her most recent publications A Line of Driftwood: The Ada Blackjack Story (2021), which breathes new life into the diaries of and historical record on Ada Blackjack – an Inupiat woman who joined an Arctic expedition in 1921 and returned two years later as the sole survivor.

After her reading, Glancy was in conversation with Angela Benkhadda, Stefan Benz, and Professor Sabine N. Meyer on her work and her life as an artist. The event concluded with a Q&A with the engaged audience, first and foremost our students, who asked, according to Glancy, the best questions she had been asked in a long time.
